311 BEDEUTENDER

311 BEDEUTENDER MARMORKOPF DES RÖMISCHEN KAISERS CLAUDIUS (10 V. CHR.-54 N. CHR.) Höhe: 25 cm. Breite: 18 cm. Tiefe: 20 cm. A.R. Provenienz: Ehemals Sammlung Dr. Schwarz, Québec in den 1970er-Jahren. (1201041) (11) IMPORTANT MARBLE HEAD OF ROMAN EMPEROR CLAUDIUS (10BC - 54AD) Height: 25 cm. Width: 18 cm. Depth: 20 cm. Total height incl. modern base: 41.5 cm. The ancient marble head from a famous collection shows Emperor Claudius, the fourth Roman Emperor. His identification can be established by comparing the head with other marble heads held in museums, not least because of this emperor’s typical hairstyle of short parallel hairs surrounding the forehead with free ears as is typical for the Augustan period. This specific hairstyle distinguishes emperor Claudius as can be seen in further portraits held at the Museum Kassel (Antikensammlung Kassel, inv. no. SK116). The identification of the head as the aforementioned emperor is without a doubt. Furthermore the pronounced eyebrows are completely in line with the image tradition of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, stylistically in direct succession of the portraits of emperor Augustus. The Augustus of Prima Porta (ca. 20BC, Vatican Museums, Rome, inv. no. 2290) can be considered as an example of comparison as its style still continues in the head on offer for sale in this lot. Altogether, it can be said that there is a change in the concept and style of portraits during the Claudian period that results in a pronounced realism as was continued in the successive Flavian dynasty. The antique work on offer for sale here shows that the facial features (possibly also at a later date) were smoothed in favour of a finer surface, while the tip of the nose and upper lip show signs of damage dating back to early late antiquity. Fine crystalline marble with partially beautiful aged patina. A.R.
