(1210571) (11) LARGE BRONZE FIGURE OF A RENAISSANCE “PAGE”, FORMERLY PROPERTY OF KING ALBERT I OF BELGIUM, PALACE OF THE COURT OF FLANDERS Bronze cast in two parts. Height: 120 cm. Base: 62 x 40 x 30 cm. According to the enclosed report by C. Cibot the work dates to the end of the 15th/ early 16th century. Accompanied by letters of authentication by the Palais de Bruxelles, dated 17 February 2016 and dated 25. February 2016, (Martime Vermeire, Adjoint Patrioine, Liste Civile de. S.M. le Roi). With enclosed copy of the inventory list “PALAIS DE LA RUE DE LA REGENCE – Relevé du mobilier appartenant à S. M. le Roi Albert”. [Comparative study of a 15th century bronze/ depiction of a young man, probably a page boy], pp. 1-8, thereby: “Etude complémentaire du page de Rizzo” (2 p.) The enclosed expert’s report mentions the sculptor Antonio Rizzo (ca. 1440 - ca. 1499). His standing figures in the niches of the Doge Palace in Venice almost all show a similar stance, such as his famous figure of Adam. Another sculpture by the artist shows the same style of clothing, especially a stone sculpture of an esquire holding a coat of arms held at the Louvre. (ill. 2). Furthermore, the Tomb of the papal procurator and the Venetian doge Niccoló Troncone at the Frari Church also features niche sculptures attributed to Antonio Rizzo, such as young men holding coat of arms. Sculptures by Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bardi, also known as Donatello should be mentioned as paragons, for example his David, created ca. 1445 held at the National Museum of Bargello in Florence. For this reason, the enclosed “Etude Comparative” by C. Cibot (see appendix) dates the bronze figure on offer for sale here to the end of the 15th/ or early 16th century. Like most of these sculptures of young men, the page sculpture has also been cast in two parts in this instance. The bronze sculpture is accompanied by a tall rectangular marble base with protruding, profiled base and overhanging cover plate; with grey marble inlays along the sides. Two inventory seals on a wire attached to the arm. Provenance: According to an enclosed letter by the “Palais de Bruxelles”, dated 25 February 2016, the sculpture and base are listed in the inventory list created in 1920 for the collection of the Palace of the Court of Flanders, Rue de la Régence, with nos. 656 and 657. Therefore formerly property of King Albert I of Belgium. It is dated and described in French as follows there: “Un bronze italien du XVIII siècle ‘Page’ – Hr. 1.20 sur socle rectangulaire en marbre jaunátre avec panneaux marbre gris – Hr. 0.62 – 0.40 x 0.30.” € 80.000 - € 90.000 Sistrix INFO | BID 36 HAMPEL ONLINE Visit www.hampel-auctions.com for around 5.000 additional images.
