STATUE OF AN EMPEROR OR COMMANDER IN ARMOUR STONE FIGURE FROM THE ROMAN PROVINCES, PROBABLY THE HISPANIC-GALLIC REGION OF THE 3RD CENTURY Height: 180 cm. The impressive life-size statue is carved out of a single block of grey marble in the shape of an armour-clad warrior. It is carved in three-quarter relief and three-dimensionally, however, the back has to be imaged within a back panel. The style of the sculpture suggests that it was created by a local workshop in one of the provinces of the Roman Empire. It is likely to assume that the place of origin lies in the Western Roman provinces of Hispania or Gaul, not least due to its prior provenance. The chest is armour-clad, with double-layered strips or lappets worn below the belt and a leather strap (“pteruges”) on the belt. This is significant for the sculpture‘s dating, as this type of uniform only came into use from the 2nd century onwards (see statues by Trajan or Hadrian held at Perge, Museum Antalya). It can therefore be assumed that the earliest date of creation for the sculpture on offer for sale here is the 2nd/3rd century. Considering all aspects it is most likely that the sculpture is to be understood as a tribute to a high-ranking Roman commander of the Western Roman provinces of the 2nd/3rd centuries, an ideal representative of the reigning emperor of the era of Trajan or its successor.
