A pier juts out from the background like the bow of aship. There is almost no human activity apart from oneperson lying on the pier, talking to another person in aboat on the lower left. Any kind of repairs seem to havecome to a standstill or completed for the moment asthe empty wood-horses in the foreground on the rightand the loose ropes on the floor suggest. The ropesare tied to an intensely black cleat, which forms avisual focal point placed at the centre of the compositionand on height of the horizon line. Impressivethree mast ships are shown especially in the right halfof the painting, with the ship furthest to the right tiltedfor repairs, highlighting the ports activities.Signs of the emerging Industrial Age show in the verybackground: a chimney from a steam boat with a columnof smoke whose height rivals the three mastships. By implying the sailing boats replacement bysteamers in the background, the painter uses thedepth of the painting to introduce the element oftime.Boudin, a contemporary witness to the Industrial Age,shows his detailed knowledge of the seascapes ofthe Old Dutch Masters in whose tradition the presentwork stands, made particularly apparent by the wayBoudin has painted the sky. However, as a closeobserver of nature, he breaks with the traditions ofthe Golden Age by introducing the steamer with itscolumn of smoke to painting.
