LEO PUTZ, 1869 MERANO

LEO PUTZ, 1869 MERANO – 1940 IBID. STILLE ZEIT – SCHLOSS HARTMANNSBERG Oil on canvas. 63 x 75 cm. Signed lower left “Leo Putz”. Verso label with title Stille Zeit – Schloß Hartmannsberg / am Chiemsee [Quiet Time – Hartmannsberg Castle / on Lake Chiemsee] and signed by Leo Putz in ink. According to the label on the reverse, which was labelled by the artist himself, the painting was created in 1912. The title which translates as Quiet Time, chosen by Putz himself, refers to the days the painter spent in the summer months. A painting created in 1910, also titled Stille Zeit shows a different composition. His painting from 1911 titled Ablegen vom Ufer [Casting off from the Riverbank] features a larger format – the composition is identical to the painting on offer for sale in this lot (cat. raisonné 433, 150 x 160cm.); there, however, the opposite riverbank is emphasized. The present painting largely corresponds to a version titled Hartmannsberg – im Kahn [Hartmanssberg – in a boat] from 1912 (cat. raisonné 435, 70 x 77 cm), probably created shortly afterwards.
