The desk on offer for sale in this lot belongs to a small group of about ten examples with identical shape and bronze décor. Two of these desks are held in German collections and are stamped “FL” for François Lieutaud, dated around the same time and have almost never been moved. The first, held at the Ansbach Residence, was delivered to the Margraves of Brandenburg in 1729; the second, mentioned in the first inventory of the Munich Residence Palace in 1759, was probably ordered when Charles VII inherited Bavaria after the death of his father in 1726. The success of this model is due to two main reasons: firstly, the personality of François Lieutaud. He became the most prestigious cabinetmaker in the kingdom after the death of André Charles Boulle in 1719. King Louis XIV bestowed him with the rare privilege of casting his own bronzes. And secondly, the creativity he demonstrates in this desk, with vibrant bronzes and a light line representing the quintessence of the Régence style. A desk of this type, preserved in the Toledo Museum ofArt and stamped “NG”, shows that Lieutaud marketed this type of desk through Noël Gérard. Both a cabinetmaker and a dealer, Gérard worked under the name “au cabinet d’Allemagne” between 1719 and 1722 before taking over the “magasin général”, the centre of the luxury goods trade in Paris until his death in 1736. The desk on offer for sale in this lot is one of the richly decorated desks and is stylistically similar to the desk of Emperor Charles VII, held in Munich. With a body of about ten examples, half of which are held in prestigious museums, it is extremely rare on the art market. Examples of comparison: Munich Residence Palace, stamped “FL” inv. no. Werk in einem Sockel, darauf Wasserkanne und Schale, flankiert von zwei Figuren: Links Venus bei der Toilette, rechts geflügelter Amorputto, der die Kanne und einen Lorbeerkranz hält. Sockel umzogen von Lorbeerblattprofil. Zifferblatt mit römischen Stunden und arabischen Minuten, umringt mit einem Früchtefeston. Zeiger durchbrochen und vergoldet. Front verglast. Rückseitig ist das Werk durch in die Figurengruppe integrierte Türe geschlossen, die Uhr somit freistellbar. Schlossscheiben-Schlagwerk für Halb- und Stundenschlag auf Glocke. Antoine Cronier, geboren 13. Januar 1732, war 1753 Lehrling bei Nicolas Pierre Thuillier, Ouvrier und 1763 Uhrmachermeister in Paris. Er starb 1806.
