702 AGOSTINO TASSI, 1578 1644 ORLANDO ENTDECKT DIE LIEBE ANGELICAS ZU MEDORO Öl auf Leinwand. Altdoubliert. 78,5 x 103 cm. Teilvergoldeter gekehlter Holzrahmen. Beigegeben ein Gutachten von Giuliano Briganti, Rom, 3. Mai 1978, in Kopie und ein weiteres aus seiner Hand vom 12. Oktober 1977, das den guten Zustand des Gemäldes hervorhebt und es einer Serie von Gemälden Agostino Tassis beiordnet. Die Darstellung nimmt Bezug auf Ludovico Ariostos „Orlando Furioso“ (Der rasende Roland) von 1516, der den „Orlando Innamorato“ (Der verliebte Roland) von Matteo Maria Boiardo von 1494 fortsetzt. Eingebettet in eine komplizierte Handlung, wird hier die Stelle gezeigt, in der Orlando, ein Neffe Karls des Großen, entdeckt, dass Angelica, Königin von Cattai, sich in den Sarazenenkämpfer Medoro und nicht in ihn verliebt hat. Briganti emphasizes the good condition of the painting and associates it with a series of paintings by Agostino Tassi. Beigegeben eine Expertise von Anna Orlando, Oktober 2019, die die Entstehungszeit auf die Zeit von 1637 und 1644 eingrenzt und die sehr gute Qualität wie auch den perfekten Erhaltungszustand hervorhebt. Ester kniet vor dem thronenden Perserkönig und empfängt ein Schwert, vor dem Thron vermutlich ihr Adoptivvater und Cousin Mordechai. Geschickt hatte Ester, die ihre jüdischen Wurzeln auf Geheiß ihres Adoptivvaters verheimlicht hatte, nicht nur den frei gewordenen Platz neben König Ahasveros errungen, sondern diesen auch von der Umkehrung eines geplanten Genozids an den Juden im persischen Reich überzeugt. Das Schwert mag symbolisch stehen für die zahlreichen getöteten Feinde der Juden in Susa 500 Männer, in allen 127 Provinzen 75.000 Männer (siehe Buch Ester). Dem vorliegenden Gemälde ist ein posthumes Portrait von Francesco de’ Medici, principe di Toscana, eingegliedert; er befindet sich geharnischt am linken Bildrand und blickt aus dem Bildfeld heraus. Provenienz: Marchesa Carlotta Cattaneo Adorno Fasciotti Giustiniani, Genua, gestorben 1989.
