(1192144) (18) Francisco de Zubarán, 1598 Fuente de Cantos -1664 Madrid MAGNIFICAT ANIMA MEA (THE VIRGIN MARY IN PRAYER) Oil on canvas. 120 x 99 cm. Monogrammed “FZ” and inscribed “MAGNIFICAT: ANIMA MEA DOMINUM” at centre below. The monogram dated the art work around 1628 – 30. The painting was first discovered by the great art historian Manuel Gómez Moreno in the José Colon Collection, near Cádiz, although Moreno initially assumed that the painting was a Velázquez and exhibited it under his pseudonym in Barcelona in 1949 – 50. It was finally Martin Soria who first identified the painting as a work by Zubarán in the artist’s 1955 catalogue raisonnée. Soria also tracked down the source of the depiction: an engraving by Martin de Vos, published by Philippe Galle of Antwerp in “Thesaurus sacrum historiarum” by Gerard de Jode (1579 – 85). Half-Portrait of the Madonna to the left in a burgundy robe, the hair covered by a beige cloth and above the blue coat. The clothes with exact drapery and skilful shading reproduced with exact materiality. Her slender fingers gently gathered to prayer. Her head, with her cheeks flushed, is slightly inclined, and with her eyes almost closed, she looks down calmly and devoutly. Behind her head shines the bright yellow sunlight in broad beams that darken to the edge of the picture. She stands in the midst of white clouds. At the bottom of the work also a painted cartouche with the sentence “Magnificat: Animamea Dominum” (My soul praises the Lord), the hymn of praise of Mary from the Gospel of Luke (1: 46 – 55). The painting excellently executed in bold bright colors. The artist was next to Diego Velázquez (1599 – 1660), the most important artist of his generation in Spain’s All texts can be translated into your own language on our homepage via Google: www.hampel-auctions.com 77
