COMMODE MAZARIN “AU JASMIN” Height: 86 cm. Width: 132 cm. Depth: 70 cm. Paris, Louis XIV period, ca. 1710 Oak structure with “à quatre couleur” veneer in blackened pear wood, various local woods including ash and burl wood, tropical wood and ivory inlays. Fire-gilt bronze mountings. Impressive “peinture en bois” effect on blackened ground, inspired by flower and still life painters of the period such as Jean-Baptiste Monnoyer (1636-1699). It is assumed that the first commodes as a newly invented type of furniture were produced in the workshop of the cabinet-maker Renaud Goudron. They are listed in the inventories of the royal Garde-Meuble for 1693-1695. Two of the early commodes are the famous pieces with tortoiseshell and metal inlays and bronze mountings that André-Charles Boulle delivered in 1708-1709 for the king‘s Grand Trianon (Boulle described this type of furniture in 1709 still as “bureau”). Four years later the delivery of a commode with floral marquetry is attested as belonging to a relation of the Sun King, Maximilian II Emanuel, Elector of Bavaria, to his exile court at the an Compiègne Palace, where the Elector was a guest of the king. They are two pieces of furniture, which Gaudron delivered on 29 July and on 7 August 1713 to Compiègne on behalf of the director of the royal Garde- Meuble, Moïse-Augustin de Fontanieu, for the furnishing of the rooms used by the Elector. This delivery is listed in the Journal du Garde-Meuble, no. 562, as Commode de bois d‘olivier.
