129 Matteo Pellizzone, Ende 15. - Anfang 16. Jahrhundert, genannt Matteo Lombardo oder Matteo da Milano Tätig in Milano und Florenz. MARMORBÜSTE EINES FLORENTINISCHEN EDELMANNES Höhe: 56,5 cm. Breite: 33,5 cm. Um 1510/15. Von jüngster Forschung an Pellizzone zugewiesen, in früherer Literatur hingegen mit Cesare Quaranta in Verbindung gebracht. Die genauen Daten des Bildhauers Matteo Pellizzone sind bislang nicht bekannt. Wahrscheinlich war er der Vater oder ein Verwandter des Andrea Pellizzone, der 1559 bis 1602 Figuren für den Mailänder Dom schuf, was auch den Beinamen des Künstlers „da Milano“ erklärt. Bereits 1471 und 1475 tritt der Name "Matteo Lombardo" in den Quellen auf. Als eines der frühen Werke Matteos kann ein Hochrelief von 1502 gesehen werden, das jedoch noch einen früheren Stil aufweist. 1893 wurden Figuren an den Grabmälern der neapolitanischen Familie di Ponzetti aus dem Jahr 1509 als von der Hand des Meisters erkannt. Wiederum Werke des Meisters Quaranta wurden bald dem Bildhauer „da Milano“ zugewiesen. Noch 1524 wird er in einem Schreiben genannt. Aus einem Dokument von 1518 geht hervor, dass unser „Mactheus de Mediolano dictus de Pelliczone marmorarius“ in Neapel ansässig war. Das vorliegende Werk eine Büste in weißem Carrara- Marmor mit kleinen Einsprengseln. Auf polychrom gefasstem, später teilvergoldetem Holzsockel. Die Schultern gerundet, mit einem Mantelumhang bedeckt, der links gebogte Falten ausbildet und dann in einem geglätteten Bogen über die Schulter zieht. Darunter ein Hemd oder Wams mit senkrechten Nähten. Der Kopf mit betont füllig jungem Gesicht leicht nach rechts gewandt, mit kleinem Kinngrübchen und geschlossenen, vollen Lippen sowie niedrigen Brauenbögen. Die Augen scheinen den Blick leicht nach oben zu richten, glatt, ohne Pupillenzeichnung. Das krauslockige Haar reiht sich unter dem Saum der Kappe kranzförmig um den Kopf, wobei über der Stirnmitte einige Locken betont hervortreten. Die Kappe mit nach oben sich weitendem Rand zeigt einen Aufschlag, der in der Frontansicht leicht flügelartig erscheint. Diese Art der Kopfbedeckung finden wir auch in Gemälden der Zeit, vor allem bei Handelsherren oder Edelleuten. Nicht auszuschließen ist, dass der Künstler hier die „Flügel“-Wirkung der Kappe bewusst gewählt hat, um eine Assoziation mit dem Typus des geflügelten Hermes, Gott des Handels, anzudeuten. Die Büste ist zweifellos von hoher musealer Qualität. Von besonderem Interesse ist jedoch, dass es sich bei dem Portrait um eine Persönlichkeit aus profanem Lebensbereich handelt, wie etwa einem Edelmann oder Kaufmann. Sie entstammt einer bedeutenden Sammlung und wurde in der Vergangenheit zunächst bereits unterschiedlichen Bildhauern – vom Veneto bis in die Toskana – zugewiesen, wobei sich einige Merkmale auch beispielsweise bei dem florentiner Künstler Simone Bianco (1512 – 1553) finden lassen, der auch in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts in Venedig tätig war. Noch bei dem letzten Besitzerwechsel 2015 war die Autorschaft noch nicht eindeutig festgestellt. Nun jedoch, seit dem Forschungsbericht von Francesco Cagliotti (siehe Literatur), ist klärendes Licht in das Dunkel dieser Künstlerfrage gekommen. Die Büste erweist sich stilistisch höchst übereinstimmend mit zwei weiteren, für den Bildhauer Matteo Pellizzone da Milano gesicherten Büsten. Zum einen die Büste der „Teodorina Cybo Usodimare“ (geb. um 1455 Napoli – 1508 Rom), um 1505/09, ehemals Villa Albani Torlonia in Rom, die sich im Bode-Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, befindet. Weiterhin das Büstenportrait des Mailänder Goldschmieds „Giampetro Crivelli“ (1463 - 1552), um 1510, im Museo e Gallerie Nazionali die Capodimonte in Neapel, Inventarnummer „(2004) OA8576“ – hier ist die Behandlung der Kleidung mit geglättetem Kragenband fast identisch. Die Büste von hochrangiger Provenienz. Wie die historischen Fotoaufnahmen zeigen, war die Büste in den höchst anspruchsvollen, der Renaissance gewidmeten Ausstellungsräumen der berühmten Sammlung „Bardini“, zusammen mit weiteren bedeutenden Werke der Renaissance (siehe Abbildung).
